The Semi-Quincentennial Year of the Declaration of Independence

What I remember most when our nation celebrated the bicentennial birth of our nation in 1976 was Operation Sail (OpSail). It was a grand parade of 16 tall ships from around the world and 113 support vessels sailing into New York Harbor on Independence Day. A ticker-tape parade down Broadway was also included as we marked our then 200th Anniversary.

As we approach our 250th Anniversary as a nation, I am sure many events are being planned. Most of these events, I suspect will take place in July. However, next Thursday, June 11, 2026, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will consecrate the United States and “entrust our nation to the love and care of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” in recognition of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. This consecration is intended to highlight the contributions Catholics have made to our nation and to foster a deeper sense of faith and civic responsibility among the faithful.

This consecration will take place during a special Mass on June 11th at 12 noon, held in Mary, Queen of the Universe Basilica in Orlando, Florida, ending the USCCB’s Spring Plenary Assembly. The event will be livestreamed on the USCCB YouTube channel and the USCCB website if anyone would like to watch it live.

We will celebrate that consecration on June 12th, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, at the 9 AM Mass in St. Francis Church, Brant Beach.

The Bishops’ conference explains that the consecration is intended to recognize the kingship of Christ and to encourage us to integrate the Gospel into our public and private life. The centuries old devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has continued to emphasizes Christ’s love, mercy, and guidance for individuals, families, and nations. This will be the first formal consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart, though the nation has previously been consecrated to Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, who was declared the Patroness of the United States on May 13, 1846.

This consecration represents a historic moment for American Catholics to renew our devotion to Christ as we give thanks for the past 250 years as a country and to seek Christ’s guidance as we look to the future as The United States of America.
