Position Summary
The Director of Aquatics & Recreation is responsible for the overall management, development, and operation of all aquatic and recreational facilities, programs, and staff. This leadership role oversees all aspects of the aquatics and recreation department, including program development, staff management, facility maintenance, and ensuring a safe and positive experience for all patrons. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with a strong background in aquatics and recreation management and a passion for community wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Management
Develop and implement comprehensive aquatic and recreational programming for all ages and skill levels, including:
Swim lesson programs (group and private)
Competitive swim program (seasonal)
Aqua fitness classes and wellness programs
Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) training courses
Recreational activities within the gymnasium and other facilities
Oversee and grow the competitive swim program, focusing on athlete development, coaching standards, and team administration.
Continuously evaluate program effectiveness and community needs to ensure offerings are relevant, engaging, and aligned with organizational goals.
Coordinate the Annual LBI 18 Mile Run & 12K Commemorative Race.
Staff Leadership & Training
Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor all aquatics and recreation staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, coaches, and facility attendants.
Conduct and oversee all required staff certifications and in-service training sessions to ensure a high level of professionalism and safety.
Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and excellent customer service among all staff.
Facility & Operations Management
Oversee the contracted services team in the daily cleanliness, maintenance, and safe operation of the pool, gymnasium, locker rooms, and all related equipment.
Manage and perform daily water chemistry testing and maintain accurate records to comply with all health and safety regulations.
Oversee all contracted services, including maintenance, repairs, and chemical supply, ensuring agreements are a good value and are being fulfilled.
Develop and enforce all facility rules and safety procedures for staff and patrons.
Administrative & Financial Management
Develop and manage the department's annual budget, including revenue generation from programming and cost control for staffing and operations.
Handle all administrative tasks related to the program including registration, scheduling, staff timesheets, facility rentals and brochure development.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, participation, incidents, and facility maintenance logs.
Required Qualifications & Certifications
Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a leadership role within an aquatics or recreation setting.
Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment:
Current Lifeguard Certification with CPR/First Aid (e.g., American Red Cross, YMCA)
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
Pool Operator Certification (e.g., Certified Pool Operator - CPO, Aquatic Facility Operator - AFO)
Proven experience in program development, staff supervision, and facility management.
Strong knowledge of water chemistry, pool maintenance, and state and local health codes.
