The Jersey Shore Civil War Roundtable invites the public to “Is the Pope Catholic (or Confederate)? Examining Pius IX’s Diplomatic Attitudes Towards the Belligerents During the Civil War,” presented by Kevin C. Donovan.
This program will explore the role of Pope Pius IX and the Catholic Church during the Civil War, including efforts by both the Union and Confederacy to influence Catholic opinion and diplomatic relations with Rome.
