October 4, The Solemnity of Saint Francis

A Samaritan came upon him [the victim of robbers] was moved with compassion at the sight.  (Lk 10:33)

The story of the Good Samaritan is in the regular weekday cycle of readings today, but it illustrates one of Francis’s greatest virtues.  His compassion for the person with leprosy comes to mind probably comes to mind first, but there are many other examples of St. Francis’s compassion.  The poor widowed mother of a friar.  The novice in distress from fasting.  Compassion forgets self, inconvenience, and expense.  It is simply a heart ready to respond to someone in need.
